Merrion Square
Only a short stroll away from the iconic shopping streets of Grafton Street, Merrion Square is Dublin’s largest and grandest Georgian square, featuring the best examples of Georgian architecture anywhere in the city. Iconic features of Merrion Square include the red-brick Georgian townhouses surrounding the square, as well as the statute of Oscar Wilde at one corner of the park.

The National Gallery

Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wild is a famous Irish writer and poet, known around the world for his famous play The Importance of Being Earnest and his poetry writing.
The Davenport is located on the same square as the famous writer’s childhood home, Merrion Square and there are a number of statues across Georgian Dublin in his memory, the most prominent of which is located at one of the corners of Merrion Square.
While visits to Oscar Wilde’s old childhood home are no longer running, it is well worth stopping by the house on Merrion Square as it is a perfect example of Dublin’s Georgian architecture.
Trinity College Dublin
Dublin is home to Ireland’s oldest and most prestigious university, Trinity College. Steeped in history, many of the college’s buildings date back to the 18th Century while the college houses the historic Book of Kells: one of Ireland’s greatest cultural treasures and a must-see for any tourist visit to Dublin City.
Trinity College is within a short walking distance of the Davenport and offers visitors a chance to walk back in history to experience old-world Dublin. Tours can be booked via the Trinity College website.
Dublin’s Top Cultural Attractions
All of Dublin’s top cultural attractions, including its main arts and sporting spaces are all within easy access from The Davenport, including The 3 Arena, The Bord Gais Energy Theatre, The Gaiety Theatre, Aviva Stadium, RDS Main Area, Croke Park and many more.
The hotel’s prime city centre location means that all of Dublin is within access of a train, luas tram, bus or taxi. Pearse Street train station is a 3-minute walk, while the nearest luas stop is 8-minutes from the lobby. Several Dublin Bus routes pass within minutes of the hotel, while there is a taxi rank conveniently located directly in front of The Davenport.

Wicklow
Wicklow is a county of endless natural beauty and historic sites, right on Dublin’s doorstep. Within 45 minutes, guests can make it from the lobby of The Davenport right into the Wicklow Mountains, renowned for their beautiful landscapes, tranquil waterfalls and rolling hills.
Glendalough, one of Ireland’s most important monastic sites, dates back to the 10th Century and is nestled beside the Glendalough Lakes and their picturesque tracks and trails.
Powerscourt Waterfall, located near the quaint village of Enniskerry, is Ireland’s largest waterfall and makes for an excellent day trip from Dublin.
Wicklow’s coastal towns offer visitors an escape from the city, including the seaside town of Greystones, which is the usual finishing point of the Bray to Greystones Coastal Walk. This trail takes in some of the most beautiful scenery on the Irish sea coast, a must-visit during any visit to Wicklow. Visitors can take a train back to Dublin City Centre directly from Bray, taking in the views along the Wicklow and South Dublin seaside.
Kildare
Located within easy reach of Dublin, Kildare is famous for its equestrian heritage, picturesque landscape, historic country homes & ornate gardens.
Horseracing runs in its blood, with two of the country’s main racecourses, The Curragh and Naas Racecourse both located in the county alongside the Irish National Stud. The renowned Japanese Gardens are located on the National Stud grounds, offering picturesque gardens to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Those wanting some retail therapy won’t be disappointed. Kildare Village offers a designer outlet shopping with over 100 retailers right in the heart of Kildare County, including the likes of Prada, Jimmy Choo & Marc Jacobs.
Meath
Known for its historic archaeological sites, Meath, also called the Royal County of Ireland, is within an hour’s travel from The Davenport.
The county’s most famous attraction, Newgrange, is a neolithic tomb that dates back to pre-historic times and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Boyne Valley, where Newgrange is located, is home to some of the best-preserved prehistoric sites in Ireland, tracing their origins back over 5,200 years, predating Egypt’s pyramids by six centuries.
Meath is also home to some of the best-preserved castles in Ireland, including Slane Castle & Trim Castle, which dates from the 1100s: well worth a trip to catch a glimpse of what life was like back in Anglo-Norman times.
